This tour of Peru has a little bit of everything, giving you a snapshot of this incredible South American country. Expect beautiful countryside, ancient history, cultural experiences and wildlife sightings as you journey to the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and the Tambopata National Reserve in the Peruvian Amazon.
In 1 week, you’ll get to see many of Peru’s top attractions and natural gems. First, spend a few days getting to know the amazing Sacred Valley, a region awash with traditional villages, Inca sites and artisan markets. You’ll also enjoy a day trip to the one and only Machu Picchu archaeological site.
After 4 days in the Sacred Valley, journey into the Amazon Rainforest to spend 3 days exploring the jaw-dropping Tambopata National Reserve. Venture into the jungle on boat tours, nature hikes and even treetop canopy walks, getting as close as you possibly can to the array of birds, monkeys, sloths, caiman, and other amazing wildlife in the world’s most biodiverse natural haven.
Take a connecting flight from Lima to Cusco, where you will be collected and transferred to the Sacred Valley.
Your driver will take you to Tambo del Inka, a beautifully boutique Sacred Valley hotel that also enjoys a spectacular riverside setting. This is an ideal place to acclimatize yourself for Machu Picchu, visited on day 3 of your tour.
Your tour of Peru now delves deep into Inca antiquity with visits to some of the Sacred Valley’s greatest sites.
Begin with a look at traditional life in Chinchero Village, where a weaving demo will take place after breakfast. Next, the agricultural terraces of Moray, one of the most impressive ancient sites in Peru. Moray’s stepped platforms are in fact an Inca food laboratory, where each terrace replicated different weather conditions throughout the empire. That way, Inca scientists could learn what grew best during the year, to maximize their crop yields!
From Moray enjoy lunch at a local Sacred Valley restaurant, followed by another ancient marvel—the Maras Salt Mines. These spectacular hillside salt pools have not changed since Inca times, and are still used to this day.
Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
Machu Picchu is considered the world’s best travel destination, an ancient wonder of the world and highlight of South America in one. Day 3 is a special day, as you take a guided tour of the great ‘Lost City’ of the Inca.
You’ll begin in style with a private train boarding at Tambo del Inka’s own platform, "Sacred Valley" train is the chosen one, followed by a scenic journey through the amazing views of the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes and onwards to Machu Picchu. Lunch and dinner are served onboard. Then, simply absorb the magic of Peru’s most iconic ancient site with a fascinating guided tour, before enjoying it all at your own pace with some priceless leisure time.
Machu Picchu conjures images of gold-clad Inca kings, explorers and myth, aided no end by its unmistakable mountaintop setting. Having fully admired the citadel during the day, you’ll take the train back to Tambo del Inka.

Your exploration of Peruvian history continues today, with visits to the village of Pisac and Inca city of Ollantaytambo.
After breakfast then, travel in a private vehicle towards Pisac. This ancient town is best known for its colorful markets of locally woven wares, fresh produce and artisan artefacts. Though catering for tourists today, Pisac market has been attracting locals from the surrounding Sacred Valley hills to trade in this way for centuries.
From Pisac, head to the huge monuments, fortress and terraces of spectacular Ollantaytambo. Ollantaytambo is one of the most impressive Inca sites in Peru, both for the archeology and Sacred Valley views once you are there. It is also the only Inca city still inhabited to this day.
On the morning of day 5, bid farewell to the Sacred Valley say hello to Puerto Maldonado, gateway to the Amazon Rainforest.
Upon arrival, you’ll be met at the airport before an exciting boat ride down the Madre de Dios River into the wild Tambopata National Reserve. After a 45-minute journey, treating you to up-close views of the riverbanks and resident wildlife, arrive at your home for the next couple of days: Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica, an exquisite eco-lodge.
A great way to familiarize yourself with the environment is by exploring the trails that wind their way around the jungle, past tall Shihuahuaco trees and creatures such as sloths, monkeys, and all kinds of birdlife.
As dusk settles on the Amazon a twilight boat tour sets off in search of nocturnal wildlife like nightjars, owls, capybaras and caiman, followed by your first Amazonian meal this evening and perfectly paired Pisco Sour cocktail.
This morning head out on a boat ride over Lake Sandoval, listening to the myriad sounds and sights of the jungle. Keep an eye out for various bird species, the endangered giant river otter, red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles or black caimans while gliding over the lake’s glass-like waters.
After lunch, spend the afternoon exploring the treetops! Inkaterra flaunts an incredible Canopy Walkway of observation platforms and bridges that tower at 344 meters (1,135 feet) above ground level. From here you can get even closer to the birds and enjoy incredible view of the rainforest too.
You then have the choice to either enjoy sundowners up above the rainforest or even spend the night in a treetop cabin. Sleeping in the trees is an unforgettable experience, and Inkaterra ensure the little luxuries keep coming too!
This memorable Amazon experience continues on your final day, witnessing thousands of butterflies at a mesmeric Butterfly House back in Puerto Maldonado. Having reached the port by boat, you’ll be shown these delicate creatures at their special sanctuary, home to some of Peru’s 3,700 different butterfly species!
Finally, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Lima and onward journey home.
